But as far as most AoE spells concerned your party still starts every fight neatly together. There is a "party planner" since one of the patches where you can choose where everyone stands. Best example is how the enemies are always all over the place while your party stands neatly together. The combat system is more complicated and more difficult by stacking most of the fights against you. That includes doing a lot of good guy stuff (saving stolen eggs for chickens!) but also working for genocidal maniacs. The story is pretty much the same as Divine Divinity, Divine Divinity 2 and DOS: your character was chosen to save the world, you just have to jump a lot of hoops first so you can become powerful enough to do so. Compared to the first DOS game this may be bigger but it isn't necessarily better. I don't understand why people are hyping this game so much.
